European Union's AC/DC Motor Market to Witness Slight Growth with +0.8% CAGR - News and Statistics - IndexBox

Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $19.6B. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2024 were Italy (38M units), Romania (20M units) and France (13M units), with a combined 59% share of total consumption.

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the consumption figures.

In value terms, Italy ($5B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($2.2B). It was followed by France.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy amounted to -2.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+2.6% per year) and France (+0.5% per year).

The countries with the highest levels of AC/DC motor per capita consumption in 2024 were Romania (1,070 units per 1000 persons), Italy (641 units per 1000 persons) and the Czech Republic (573 units per 1000 persons).

From 2013 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while consumption for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the per capita consumption figures.

In 2024, production of AC/DC motors was finally on the rise to reach 85M units for the first time since 2021, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, production, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at 120M units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, production remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, AC/DC motor production soared to $15.9B in 2024 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. Italy (38M units) constituted the country with the largest volume of AC/DC motor production, comprising approx. 45% of total volume. Moreover, AC/DC motor production in Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Germany (9.8M units), fourfold. Romania (9.4M units) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

In Italy, AC/DC motor production contracted by an average annual rate of -1.1% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Germany (+0.4% per year) and Romania (-1.6% per year).

In 2024, overseas purchases of AC/DC motors decreased by -11.6% to 89M units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 133M units. From 2022 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, AC/DC motor imports dropped rapidly to $12B in 2024. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2013 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $14.2B in 2023, and then plummeted in the following year.

In 2024, Italy (13M units), Poland (12M units), Germany (12M units), Romania (12M units), France (8.5M units) and the Czech Republic (7.2M units) was the major importer of AC/DC motors in the European Union, achieving 74% of total import. It was distantly followed by Spain (4.8M units), constituting a 5.4% share of total imports. Hungary (3.4M units), the Netherlands (2.8M units) and Slovakia (2.5M units) took a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, Germany ($3.2B) constitutes the largest market for imported AC/DC motors in the European Union, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($1.2B), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 9.1% share.

In Germany, AC/DC motor imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+1.4% per year) and France (+2.2% per year).

In 2024, electric motors; AC motors, single-phase (41M units) represented the major type of AC/DC motors, making up 46% of total imports. Electric motors (20M units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by electric motors (16M units) and electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 750W but not exceeding 75kW (9M units). All these products together took approx. 52% share of total imports. Electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 75kW (1.4M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports of electric motors; AC motors, single-phase decreased at an average annual rate of -1.1% from 2013 to 2024. At the same time, electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 75kW (+18.1%), electric motors (+6.7%) and electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 750W but not exceeding 75kW (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 75kW emerged as the fastest-growing type imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2013-2024. By contrast, electric motors (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Electric motors (+9.9 p.p.) and electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 750W but not exceeding 75kW (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while electric motors; AC motors, single-phase and electric motors saw its share reduced by -3.5% and -10.3% from 2013 to 2024, respectively. The shares of the other products remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest types of imported AC/DC motors were electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 75kW ($3.4B), electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 750W but not exceeding 75kW ($3B) and electric motors ($1.5B), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Electric generators, electric motors; AC motors, single-phase, electric generators, electric motors, generators and electric generators lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Electric generators, with a CAGR of +15.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main imported products over the period under review, while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $135 per unit in 2024, with a decrease of -4.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, AC/DC motor import price increased by +71.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $141 per unit, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Import price indicated a notable increase from 2013 to 2024: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, AC/DC motor import price increased by +71.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2023 when the import price increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $141 per unit, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($261 per unit), while Romania ($12 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2024, approx. 54M units of AC/DC motors were exported in the European Union; dropping by -14.7% compared with the previous year. In general, exports saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 8.1% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at 85M units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2024, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, AC/DC motor exports fell to $16.9B in 2024. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2024: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2024 figures, exports increased by +43.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2023 with an increase of 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $17.4B, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

The shipments of the three major exporters of AC/DC motors, namely Italy, Germany and Poland, represented more than half of total export. It was distantly followed by France (4.7M units), the Czech Republic (3.8M units) and Slovenia (3.7M units), together generating a 22% share of total exports. Hungary (2.1M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Germany ($5.4B) remains the largest AC/DC motor supplier in the European Union, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($1.6B), with a 9.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 7.9% share.

In Germany, AC/DC motor exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2013-2024. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (+1.9% per year) and Italy (-0.2% per year).

Electric motors; AC motors, single-phase (21M units) and electric motors (18M units) were the major types of AC/DC motors in 2024, amounting to approx. 39% and 33% of total exports, respectively. Electric motors (7.1M units) took the next position in the ranking, followed by electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 750W but not exceeding 75kW (5.8M units). All these products together took approx. 24% share of total exports. The following types - generators (1.5M units) and electric motors; AC motors, multi-phase, of an output exceeding 75kW (1.1M units) - together made up 4.8% of total exports.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2023 an increase of 34%. The level of export peaked in 2024 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($476 per unit), while Slovenia ($49 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
