Honda e:Ny1 uses Vitesco drive system

Honda is equipping its new electric SUV model, marketed in Europe as e:Ny1, with Vitesco Technologies’ EMR3 integrated final drive. This is the eighth order for the EMR3, according to the supplier.

The electric drive system is a 3-in-1 unit that integrates power electronics, a drive unit and a reduction gearbox. This third generation of Vitesco’s integrated axle drives is EMR for Electronics Motor Reducer. Vitesco’s electric final drive for Honda achieves a peak power of 150 kW and a torque of 310 Nm at a weight of 76 kilograms.

The EMR3 is not the latest electric drive from Vitesco; the supplier has already presented the EMR4 in 2021, which covers the power range from 80 to 230 kW. Depending on the customer’s wishes, the EMR4 is available as a permanently excited or externally excited synchronous motor: one with permanent magnets containing rare earths and one without.

The EMR3, on the other hand, is always a PSM with a permanent magnet. This generation was only offered in two power levels with 100 or 150 kW. The 100 kW model technology is mainly familiar from the numerous PSA BEVs, but Hyundai also relies on the EMR3 from Vitesco in China. According to the supplier, the EMR3 has been selected for eight vehicle brands. Over three-quarters of a million units have been produced by June 2023, and the EMR3 has “proven to be a great market success for the company”.

The Honda e:Ny1 is based on the e:N Architecture F, a Honda platform for front-wheel drive electric cars. The model is a four-door B-segment electric SUV that is said to have a WLTP range of 214 kilometres on a 68.8 kWh battery pack.

“It is an honour for us to deliver our successful electric axle drive to Honda for its new e:Ny1 model. We also see this business as a confirmation of our global strategy with well-established manufacturing and R&D sites in core world markets,” said Thomas Stierle, board member and head of the Electrification Solutions division at Vitesco Technologies.

Honda has revealed the pricing for its new e:Ny1 battery-electric compact SUV in the UK. The car will start from £44,995 OTR when order books in the UK open in late October. Furthermore, the offer includes “5 Years Complimentary Servicing, 5 Year Guarantee and 5 Years UK + European Roadside Assistance”, according to the manufacturer.

The e:Ny1’s range tops out with the Advance grade, which starts from £47,195 OTR and includes further convenience and premium features. “With the backdrop of 75 years of Honda engineering excellence and integrity, the all-new e:Ny1 delivers the performance, comfort and usability that Honda customers have come to expect, with the uniqueness of the EV powertrain,” said Rebecca Adamson, Head of Automobile at Honda UK. “As Honda’s second fully electric vehicle, it has an important role in the brand’s electrification journey.”, (update)
